The Plant maintenance, lubrication and filtration feature continue to highlight the Industrial Internet of Things IIoT. We talk to Stefan Swanepoel of Pragma about the new technologies that are blurring the lines between asset management, condition based maintenance and operational performance. We also present new professional solutions unveiled by testing, inspection and certification leader, Bureau Veritas (BV); and we visit Mato Products to talk to Benjamin Sibanda about the company’s refurbished clop manufacturing machine and its conveyor belt lacing and cleaning solutions

Materials handling, conveying and lifting opens with a piece from thyssenkrupp about its solutions for the South and Southern African sugar industries. This is followed by articles from Weba Chute Systems, ContiTech and FLEXICON.

In our Corrosion feature, Michel Basson, sassda’s Western Cape branch manager talks about the vital role of chrome-rich passive layer on stainless steel and the importance of access to oxygen in maintaining and reforming this microscopic layer should it be damaged.

HVAV features: an article from UNIDO’s Stephan Sicars about the migration towards natural refrigerants for chillers, who argues that the disadvantages are diminishing; and a piece from Ingersol Rand about its highly efficient sub-freezing air dryer.

Water and wastewater processing is our richest feature in this issue. Xylem’s water reclamation specialist, Lucinda Jooste, talks to us about the current drought in the Western Cape, which she compares to Arizona in the USA. Jooste argues for longer-term solutions based on reduced reliance on rain dependant surface resources.

Also featured are: a piece from IDTechEx about the case for producing drinking water from brackish water using integrated energy harvesting technology; an article from AVK Holdings about the need to identify and invest in alternative water sources in the Western Cape; and, from SRK Consulting’s principal hydrogeologist, Sarah Skinner, a piece about identifying the real source of nitrogen contamination in minewater.
