This paper from the proceedings of the IIW 2017 International Conference in Shanghai, China, describes the development of successful welding techniques for zirconium-clad pressure vessels and reactors using narrow gap submerged arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and some shielded metal arc welding.

Global voestalpine Böhler Welding specialists for cladding, petrochemical and chemical processing, M Decherf, R Demuzere and F Ciccomascolo, present an advanced electroslag strip cladding process that enables thin single layer Alloy 625 deposits to be achieved that meet the iron (Fe) content requirements for the oil & gas and chemical processing industries.

African Fusion visits SAIW’s Material Testing Laboratory and talks to the Institute’s new technical services manager, Riaan Loots.

On August 4, 2017 at Lincoln Electric SA’s Weld Tech Centre in Midrand, the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) held an event to send off South Africa’s welding champion to the 2017 World Skills International Competition. African Fusion reports.

Since publication of the last issue of African Fusion, Morris Maroga, Jim Guild, Harold Jansen, Herman Potgieter and I have attended a very busy week in Shanghai, China. Several welding related events were staged, starting with the IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference.

Harold Jansen and I were recently in Vienna for the EN/ISO 9712 International Conference for Certification and Standardisation in NDT, along with the ICNDT Working Group 1 meeting. The EN/ISO 9712 Standard specifies the qualification and certification requirements for personnel who perform industrial NDT.

Following four years of CHIETA-funded planning and curriculum development work, the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) has released a new artisan-training programme for welders that is now ready for implementation. African Fusion talks to SAIW’s business development manager, Etienne Nell, about this exciting change.

Having become the southern African distributor for Polysoude orbital welding systems, Renttech SA held an orbital welding open day at its Secunda branch. African Fusion’s Peter Middleton attends and talks to welding specialist, Eduan Naude.

At an SAIW evening meeting earlier this year, Thulani Mngomezulu, technical manager at Lincoln Electric South Africa, presented a talk about submerged arc welding and highlighted a simple and cost effective way of achieving higher deposition rates.

African Fusion’s Peter Middleton visits Hydra Arc’s Sky Hill engineering, fabrication and machining facilities in Secunda and talks to engineering manager Ewan Huisamen and Gert Swanepoel, the superintendent of the state-of the-art machine shop now being finalised in Bay 4 of the facility.

At Machine Tools Africa during May, global laser and bending specialist, Bystronic, represented in South Africa by First Cut, presented its holistic approach for fabricators. African Fusion talks to Bystronic’s Philipp Burgener and Andrew Poole of First Cut.

African Fusion’s Peter Middleton talks to country business developer, Eduardo Poblete of Air Liquide Welding France about Oerlikon seamless cored wires for flux-cored (FCAW) and submerged arc (SAW) welding.

As part of the Nexelia offering for automotive and metal fabrication, Air Liquide has developed a unique set of proprietary nozzles for modern laser welding processes. African Fusion finds out more from Rolf Schluep and Rob Lawrence.

In order to better help SMEs, farmers, industrial workshops and fabricators from large to small to succeed in the leaner economy, Afrox has added several new cost-effective products to its Afrox Industrial range and launched a new rental service for its premium Miller brand. African Fusion talks to Dewald Bodenstein, the product manager for arc equipment at Afrox.

Yaskawa has developed a compact and flexible system for high-speed robot-based spot welding. The modular solution comprises a cell with positioner and two spot welding robots; particularly lightweight spot welding guns; a nut welding machine and a full range of accessories.

The WorldSkills SA competition was held in Durban last month and we are very pleased with the organisation of the event and the results. Philippus Terblanche, who won our SAIW Youth Welding Challenge last year, again emerged as the winner. Congratulations to him, but also to the other two candidates, Angel Mathebula, a product of the SAIW Foundation, and Samukelo Mbambani who, like Philippus, comes from ArcelorMittal’s welder training school.

African Fusion talks to SAIW’s Etienne Nell about the WorldSkills SA Welding competition and the breakthrough progress being made in South Africa with respect to artisan training and trade tests.
